Chilkat & Ravenstail weaving are a traditional form of creating ceremonial regalia practiced by Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, and other NorthWest Coast peoples of Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, & Oregon.
In the 1990s, only an estimated six people still practiced true Chilkat weaving. Kaagwaantaan Clan, G̱ooch Hít woman Shaxʼsaani Kéekʼ Jennie Thlunaut (1891–1986) was a celebrated Chilkat weaver. Thlunaut trained T’akhdeintaan Clan woman Clarissa Rizal (1956-2016).
Rizal trained a new generation of weavers, including her daughter Wooshkindein Da.áat Lily Hope. Lily was one of the last apprentices to Clarissa, and is now my mentor.
