Chilkat weavers who learned online during the pandemic see their robes come to life“Over the last 120 years, fewer than a dozen Chilkat blanket makers or robe weavers existed at any given point," says Lily Hope. "We are changing that story this week."

Lily Hope on Instagram: "Throwback To Sunday, April 16 Haha. Eleven days ago!? Me and @donedin And a whole slew of others: Hannah S., Mary, Tana, Andy, Hannah W, Nicholas, Joti, Maya, Becca, Aunt Deanna, and (omg, who am I forgetting?) all crammed final activities in the studio, and we finished both these child sized Chilkat robes…..In the same day. This was Donedin’s capstone project. We couldn’t have done it without @akwatts who was weaving all night for weeks! And @lituya_art Ricky, who is the fastest border weaver this side of the Mississippi!!! Yeehaw! We estimate that the robe on the right took over 450 hours. And the one of the left took 767 hours. Yes. That’s 1217 hours. Or the equivalent of 32.4 weeks of full time work. More than half a year. We are pretty seasoned weavers, and these robes kicked our collected booties. It’s been a gift to be weaving Ravenstail projects now. Such a mind shift. Gunalchéesh to my community of weavers and enthusiastic supporters who make this work FUN and do-able without breaking. . . . . Did you know my three work goals are: 1. Weave new works 2. Weave with people often 3. Get world exposure for Chilkat and Ravenstail textiles. Someday, very soon, may people everywhere see our work and know where these textiles originate, who makes them, and how they’re worn/celebrated.
